A Grand Estate in European Style
You'll feel as if you stepped back in time in the park-like gardens of an old English estate at this property, complete with fountain, Italianate marble statuary, stone walls with built-in stiles, traditional plantings, and a landscape plan first created by renowned Fairfield landscape designer, Agnes Clark. Nineteen acres of sunlit fields, wooded groves and perennial beds surround this charming Colonial-style home and beckon you to enjoy a tramp around the multiple gardens before arriving at the elegant pool and pool house, where the owners enjoy lazy summer afternoons with their guests.
An Enchanting Sunken Garden
Behind this stone and shingle-style home is an unexpected delight: a carefully constructed sunken garden, bordered by slate and fieldstone walls, home to multiple varieties of boxwood, peonies, hydrangea and hostas. An arbor draped with purple wisteria shades its far end; beyond that lies a gurgling stream with bridge and waterfall. A fabulous collection of vintage cars is on display as well, adding to the old-world feel of this beautiful space, also originally designed by Fairfield landscape designer, Agnes Clark.
A Japanese-Inspired Oasis
Two koi ponds and an elegantly arched bridge welcome you to this very personal garden, lovingly developed over 35 years by its owner. Magnificent stands of bamboo rustle and rattle in the wind. Japanese-style trellises and moss-covered stones lend this property a dramatic effect. Scented flowers and foliage encourage bees and birds to visit, and multiple bird houses encourage avian friends to stay for a while. Built on a rocky ledge, this garden creation is a uniquely individual labor of love.
A Quiet Sanctuary
This peaceful home on a hill overlooks pastures with grazing horses and a lovely view of the rolling Connecticut countryside. A peaceful, shaded garden is home to ferns, forget-me-nots and astilbe; stone steps lead to a striking garden display surrounding the pool. A favorite family spot in this garden is the Butterfly Path, where the children are delighted in summer by the brightly colored wings of butterflies, bees and moths, drawn there by a careful selection of their favorite flowers. When the bees tire of the Butterfly Path, you'll find them zooming in and out of the dozens of roses elegantly trained along a wooden fence.
A Vestige of History and Stunning Water Views
It's hard to know where to look first in this garden. A visitor is struck perhaps by the views, both in front and back, of Long Island Sound, but then one is inexorably drawn to the stone foundation of the old onion barn that still remains on this former farmland. The Greek Revival home, built in the 1800s, also stands witness to a previous life lived here, when the land was tilled in spring and set with onion bulbs, close to the harbor where the harvest would be loaded on boats in fall. A twenty-first-century life of elegance and ease is also apparent here, though, in gardens brimful with colorful flowers, creating a stunning portrait of past and present.
